How visits to EngagedLab are measured
We count visits so we can see which parts of the product are used and improve them. This page says exactly what that involves, what it never involves, and how to switch it off for your browser.

What is recorded
For each visit, and nothing beyond it:
The pages you view
The address of each page without anything after a question mark, when you opened it, and how long it was in view while you were using it. Time with the tab in the background, or with no input for five minutes, is not counted. For the pages of a lab, only the kind of page is recorded (the player, the studio or the insights page), not which lab it was. Our demo lab and our example labs are public pages that anyone can open, so for those the address is recorded as it was visited, like any other page of ours. An address that is not one of our pages is recorded only as "page not found", never as it was typed or linked.
How you arrived
The website that linked to us (its domain only, not the page), and the campaign tags in the link if there were any (the utm_ parameters, or a ref or source tag used in place of utm_source). A tag that contains an email address is not kept.
Your device, in general terms
Whether it is a phone, a tablet or a computer; the browser and operating system and their main version; the size of the screen and the window; your browser's language and time zone.
Approximately where you are
The country your browser's time zone belongs to, and nothing more precise: no region and no town. Your IP address is not used to find where you are, and it is never stored or sent to anyone else.
Whether you were signed in
Yes or no, and nothing more: not which account, and no account number or email address. The random numbers described below are how visits from the same browser are grouped together.
What is stored in your browser
Four small entries in local storage, no cookies
el.v: a random visitor number and a count of your visits, so a return visit can be told from a first one. It expires 13 months after it was created and is never extended.
el.s: a random number for the current visit, which ends after 30 minutes without activity.
el.analytics.notice: that you have seen the notice about measurement.
el.analytics.optout: only if you switch measurement off, so it stays off. It is then the only one of these entries kept: the others are deleted.
A fifth, el.analytics.internal, is set only in the browsers of our own staff, so that their visits are left out of the figures.
How long it is kept
Thirteen months
Visit records are deleted automatically 13 months after the visit, long enough to compare a month with the same month a year earlier and no longer.
What this does not do
This measurement is not advertising and is not shared with advertisers or any other company. It does not follow you to other websites, it uses no fingerprinting, it is not linked to your account or your email address, and it records nothing you type into a lab. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, nothing is counted and nothing is stored, and entries kept from before you turned it on are deleted (apart from el.analytics.optout, if you had switched measurement off). Our server checks for the signal as well, so it is honoured even if your browser only sends it with its requests and does not show it to the page. In that case the page cannot see it and may still keep the entries described above in your browser, but no visit is recorded.
Why, and who to ask
The reason we do it
We rely on our legitimate interest in understanding how EngagedLab is used so we can improve it, and on the exception UK law makes for statistics collected for that purpose, which is why we tell you about it here and let you switch it off rather than asking you to accept a banner.
Questions and requests
