How to Add Interactive Labs to Canvas
To add interactive labs to Canvas, generate a lab in EngagedLab, export a SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 package, and upload it through a SCORM tool such as the SCORM integration or as an external tool. Learner progress persists via cmi.suspend_data, and scores return to the Canvas Gradebook through SCORM tracking or LTI 1.3 AGS.
Supported standards in Canvas
SCORM export is live today. LTI 1.3 with OIDC login and Assignment & Grade Services (AGS) is built and awaiting institution-specific validation before it goes live in your Canvas tenancy.
| Standard | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| SCORM 1.2 | Supported | Via the Canvas SCORM tool |
| SCORM 2004 (3rd/4th Ed.) | Supported | Sequencing and mastery rollup |
| LTI 1.3 | Built — validation in progress | OIDC login, JWKS launch verification |
| AGS grade passback | Built — validation in progress | Automatic Gradebook posting |
Importing an EngagedLab lab into Canvas
- Step 1
Export the SCORM package from EngagedLab
Open your finished lab and choose Export → SCORM. Canvas handles both SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004; either export is a single self-contained .zip with the Blackboard runtime engine embedded for consistent playback.
- Step 2
Upload it to Canvas
In your course, open the SCORM tool in Course Navigation and import the .zip. Choose whether to load it as an assignment (graded), a page, or an ungraded module item, then place it in the relevant module.
- Step 3
Learner state persists via cmi.suspend_data
The lab stores progress and answers in cmi.suspend_data as learners work, so they can resume mid-lab. Once loaded, the package is offline-capable and re-syncs tracking data when the connection returns.
- Step 4
Scores return to the Gradebook
When the SCORM item is imported as an assignment, completion and score report back to the Canvas Gradebook automatically. For live grade passback without SCORM, use LTI 1.3 with AGS once validation is complete for your instance.
Troubleshooting Canvas SCORM tracking
Canvas SCORM not tracking completion or scores — how do I fix it?
When importing in the Canvas SCORM tool, choose "Import as an Assignment" so a Gradebook column is created and completion is recorded. If you import as a page or module item, Canvas has nowhere to store the score. EngagedLab reports lesson status and score at the end of a lab, so completing the final section is required for tracking to register.
How do I upload a SCORM package to Canvas?
Use the SCORM tool in your course’s Course Navigation (added by your Canvas admin). Click Upload, select the EngagedLab .zip, wait for it to process, then set the import type — assignment, graded page, or module item — and add it to the relevant module.
Can I get grade passback in Canvas without SCORM?
Yes — LTI 1.3 with Assignment and Grade Services (AGS) posts scores directly to the Gradebook on launch, with no package to re-upload. LTI 1.3 is built into EngagedLab and requires institution-specific validation before it goes live in your tenancy.
